Labour Relations in Transition - Wages, Employment and Industrial Conflict in Russia (Hardcover): Simon Clarke Labour Relations in Transition - Wages, Employment and Industrial Conflict in Russia (Hardcover)
Simon Clarke
R3,552 Discovery Miles 35 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Labour Relations in Transition provides a unique insight into the realities of Russian industrial enterprises in the transition period as it affects workers on the shop floor. Based on a unique collaborative programme of ethnographic and case study research, this volume includes original work by Western and Russian scholars focusing on the restructuring of wages, employment and industrial relations, and how workers have responded to these changes. As well as presenting pioneering analysis of trade unions and industrial conflict, Labour Relations in Transition addresses changing status hierarchies within the workforce, the position of women in production, the process of bankruptcy, and insider and outsider control. This is the third volume in the series Management and Industry in Russia and will be welcomed by sociologists and Russian specialists for addressing contemporary Labour-Management relations within the context of the changing significance of work and work relations in the lives of Russian workers.

The Workers' Movement in Russia (Hardcover): Simon Clarke, Peter Fairbrother, Vadim Borisov The Workers' Movement in Russia (Hardcover)
Simon Clarke, Peter Fairbrother, Vadim Borisov
R4,330 Discovery Miles 43 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Perestroika's fate was determined by the hostile reaction of the working class. Strikes, protest and the fear of working class action had a devastating impact, yet relatively little is known about the workers' movement during this period. This book surveys the development of the new workers' movement in Russia under perestroika to understand how it connected with the workers at shop floor level and the national and local political authorities to whom it addressed its demands, and whose development it sought to influence. Drawing on a programme of collaborative research on Russian industrial relations from 1987 to 1992, the authors use a series of case studies to explain the gulf between the thousands of tiny independent groups, often based in a single enterprise or even a single shop and regional and national organizations without a grassroots base. Extensive interviews with participants, tape and video recordings as well as substantial documentary material are used in case studies of the 1989 miners' strike in Kuzbass, the Kuzbass Regional Council of Workers' committees, the Independent Miner's Union in Kuzbass, Sotsprof in Moscow and the Federation of Air Traffic Controllers' Unions.

The Formation of a Labour Market in Russia (Hardcover): Simon Clarke The Formation of a Labour Market in Russia (Hardcover)
Simon Clarke
R3,699 Discovery Miles 36 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Russian labour market has been hailed by some economists as being 'perfectly flexible' because Russia has achieved enormous employment restructuring with minimal unemployment, and by others as plagued by rigidities since pay structures have been frozen, inequality has increased and job creation has been negligible. Such disagreements reflect both the lack of serious research on the formation of a labour market in Russia and the lack of theoretical agreement as to what constitutes a labour market. Simon Clarke addresses these empirical and theoretical issues on the basis of statistical survey and case study data collected within the framework of a large-scale collaborative research programme on the restructuring of labour and employment in Russia. The book reviews the historical context, the statistical data and the theoretical issues before proceeding to a detailed analysis of the development of the labour market in the interaction of the labour market strategies of employers and employees. The Formation of a Labour Market in Russia will be of interest to scholars of transition studies and labour economics, industrial relations specialists and sociologists of labour.

Conflict and Change in the Russian Industrial Enterprise (Hardcover): Simon Clarke Conflict and Change in the Russian Industrial Enterprise (Hardcover)
Simon Clarke
R3,543 Discovery Miles 35 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Conflict and Change in the Russian Industrial Enterprise focuses on the new kinds of conflict that arise in the transition to a market economy. Following an editorial introduction, two chapters develop theories from new empirical research into patterns of conflict and forms of trade unionism in Russian enterprises in the transition period. These are followed by a detailed case study of the development of an independent trade union in one large industrial enterprise, and a chapter which explores changes in the status hierarchy of the industrial enterprise. Two chapters then address the much-neglected issue of gender differentiation in the work place and both chapters question the supposed passivity of Russian women workers. The two final chapters address the issue of conflict and change in the external relations of enterprises through case studies of the process of bankruptcy and of conflict between insiders and outsiders.

Researching Beneath the Surface - Psycho-Social Research Methods in Practice (Paperback): Simon Clarke, Paul Hoggett Researching Beneath the Surface - Psycho-Social Research Methods in Practice (Paperback)
Simon Clarke, Paul Hoggett
R1,173 Discovery Miles 11 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since the 1990s, the social sciences have begun to change. Traditional models of human rationality which opposed reason to passion are being challenged. The familiar split between individual and society, psychology and sociology, is now recognized as unhelpful to the study of both. And, as ways have been sought to overcome such splits, psychoanalysis has increasingly appeared in the breach. Drawing also on some aspects of discourse psychology, continental philosophy and anthropological and neuro-scientific understandings of the emotions, psycho-social studies has emerged as an embryonic new paradigm in the human sciences in the UK. Psycho-social studies uses psychoanalytic concepts and principles to illuminate core issues within the social sciences. Psycho-social studies is also informing the development of new methodologies in the social sciences including the use of free association and biographical interview methods, the application of infant observation methodologies to social observation, the development of psychoanalytic ethnography/fieldwork and attention to transference/countertransference dynamics in the research process. This book examines some of these methodological developments and draws upon the experiences of a group of researchers and doctoral students based around the Centre for Psycho-Social Studies at the University of the West of England.

The Russian Enterprise in Transition - Case Studies (Hardcover): Simon Clarke The Russian Enterprise in Transition - Case Studies (Hardcover)
Simon Clarke
R4,204 Discovery Miles 42 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Russian Enterprise in Transition provides a unique insight into the realities of the restructuring of Russian industrial enterprises in the transition period from the boardroom to the shop floor. An introductory chapter by Simon Clarke, which gives an overview of the industrial enterprise in transition, is followed by four in-depth case study reports of enterprises, covering the period since the beginning of the radical reform. Each report looks at the changing strategy of management at various levels in response to the challenge of transition, at the response of the shop floor and to the more subtle changes in values and social relations within the enterprise over the period of reform. Together the reports cover five enterprises which provide a cross-section of different types of former state enterprises. Two of the enterprises covered were among the pioneers of privatization, two were flagships of the military-industrial sector which had to respond to the collapse of the traditional markets, and the fifth was a passenger transport enterprise which remains in state control. The Russian Enterprise in Transition is the fourth volume in the series Management and Industry in Russia, reporting directly on the results of a unique programme of case study and ethnographic research into the restructuring of social relations in Russian industrial production. Together these case study reports provide a unique insight into industrial life in Russia and are an essential component to the previous volumes in the series, which have focused on substantive thematic analysis.

Simon Clarke
R3,368 Discovery Miles 33 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Throughout the 1990s, Russian households experienced a dramatic fall in their traditional sources of subsistence: wages and social benefits. Many commentators have argued that households have adopted 'survival strategies' that enable them to make ends meet, particularly taking second jobs, growing their own food and calling on the help of family and friends. This book reviews the available data to analyse the forms, scale and incidence of these phenomena. The author finds that so-called 'survival strategies' merely represent a continuation of traditional soviet practices. He demonstrates that they disproportionately benefit the better off and that they do not provide a means by which those who have suffered misfortune can compensate for a fall in their earnings. Instead, he illustrates that most Russian households have adapted simply by cutting expenditure rather than by finding new sources of income. The author concludes by arguing that the notion of a 'household survival strategy' is inappropriate for the study of post-soviet society. Based on the analysis of a wide range of qualitative and quantitative data, Making Ends Meet in Contemporary Russia provides a comprehensive analysis of the means by which Russian households have secured their subsistence in the face of a collapse in wages and employment since the end of the soviet system. It will be required reading for all students, scholars and researchers of transition studies, development studies and human geography.

Leading Learning - Process, Themes and Issues in International Contexts (Hardcover): Tom O'Donoghue, Simon Clarke Leading Learning - Process, Themes and Issues in International Contexts (Hardcover)
Tom O'Donoghue, Simon Clarke
R3,991 Discovery Miles 39 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The study of educational leadership makes little sense unless it is in relation to who the leaders are, how they are leading, what is being led, and with what effect. Based on the premise that learning is at the heart of leadership and that leaders themselves should be learners, the Leadership for Learning series explores the connections between educational leadership, policy, curriculum, human resources and accountability. Each book in the series approaches its subject matter through a three-fold structure of process, themes and impact.

Series Editors - Clive Dimmock, Mark Brundrett and Les Bell

The notion that school transformation is dependent on exceptional leaders is increasingly seen as unrealistic and unsustainable. Instead, the idea of distributed leadership, which promotes the view that all stakeholders have complementary leadership roles to play in enhancing student learning, is now being promoted as a more useful framework for understanding schools and how they might be changed.

Subscribing to the notion of distributed leadership, O'Donoghue and Clarke identify two key groups: the 'leaders of learning' and the 'leaders for learning'. The leaders of learning - and the focus of this book - are those working at the school level to improve the quality of learning in the classroom, such as teachers, principals, pupils and involved members of the local school community. The leaders for learning are the policy-makers and administrators whose support is crucial. The authors argue that in order to be effective leaders, both groups require an understanding of:

  • Broad trends in contemporary leadership theory
  • Recent views on learning theory
  • The importance of teachers engaging continually in learning about their practice
  • The significance of creating and sustaining schools as learning organisations
  • Forging links between leadership and learning

The book's examination of the shifting approaches to leading learning in contemporary schools is enriched by innovative examples drawn from a range of international contexts.

Leading Learning will appeal to students involved in masters and doctoral courses relevant to the field and those undertaking programmes of school leadership preparation and development. It will also be of interest to academics working in the field of educational leadership and management.

Simon Clarke, Herbert Hahn, Paul Hoggett
R3,983 Discovery Miles 39 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book has two essential aims. First, to introduce some of the key assumptions behind relational psychoanalysis to an international audience and to outline the points where this approach counters, complements, or extends existing object relations (Kleinian and Independent) traditions. Second, to consider some of the implications of the relational turn for the application of psychoanalytic concepts and methods beyond the consulting room. The emergence of what has become known as "the relational turn" in psychoanalysis has interesting implications not just for clinical practice, but for other psychoanalytically informed practices, such as group relations, the human service professions, and social research. Relational forms of psychoanalysis have emerged primarily in the USA, and as a result their core concepts and methods are less well-known in other countries, including the UK. Moreover, even within the USA, few attempts have so far been made to consider the wider implications of this development for social and political theory; intervention in groups and organizations, and the practice of social research.

MANAGEMENT AND INDUSTRY IN RUSSIA - Formal and Informal Relations in the Period of Transition (Hardcover): Simon Clarke MANAGEMENT AND INDUSTRY IN RUSSIA - Formal and Informal Relations in the Period of Transition (Hardcover)
Simon Clarke
R3,205 Discovery Miles 32 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Management and Industry in Russia is a major examination of production relations in Russian industry during the transition process. Using a series of authoritative and thorough case studies, the authors focus on the gap between formal and informal relations in the work place, a key feature of traditional Soviet industrial production.Focusing on four contrasting regions in Russia - Moscow, Samara, Kuzbass and the Komi Republic - an experienced group of researchers has used a wide range of qualitative and ethnographical research methods to explore production relations in the Soviet enterprise. The research is based on a series of longitudinal case studies of between two and four enterprises in each region. The economic, social and political developments in each region have also been monitored. Each of the papers in this collection focuses on one aspect of life in a post-Soviet enterprise which it places in the context of the interaction of formal and informal relations in production. The areas discussed include the Soviet system of production, attitudes to work, the specificity of Soviet production, paternalism in state management, the role of women, the role of middle management and the continuing importance of the plan and pay systems.

Thida Kheang, Tom O'Donoghue, Simon Clarke
R3,300 Discovery Miles 33 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book investigates the relationship between context and leadership in post-conflict Cambodia. Building on the understanding that approaches to leadership are tightly woven within the contexts that leaders operate, the authors examine the case of primary school leadership in Cambodia. A low-income and post-conflict society rocked by civil war and genocide between the 1960s and the 1990s, the country is - perhaps unsurprisingly - faced with numerous challenges as it engages in the process of national rehabilitation and reconstruction, particularly in relation to the education system. The authors provide a comprehensive historical background to primary school leadership not only in Cambodia, but in post-conflict environments more broadly: informing school leadership preparation, development and support, and facilitating understanding of the context in which school leaders work. This book will be of value to students and scholars of primary school education and education in post-conflict countries, as well as to practitioners and policy makers.
